SPHERES

sphere  (sfr) n.
1. Mathematics A three-dimensional surface, all points of which are equidistant from a fixed point.
2. A spherical object or figure.
3. A celestial body, such as a planet or star.
4. The sky, appearing as a hemisphere to an observer: the sphere of the heavens.
5. Any of a series of concentric, transparent, revolving globes that together were once thought to contain the moon, sun, planets, and stars.
6. The extent of a person's knowledge, interests, or social position.
7. An area of power, control, or influence; domain. See Synonyms at field.
tr.v. sphered, spher·ing, spheres
1. To form into a sphere.
2. To put in or within a sphere.
3. To surround or encompass.

The colloquial terms are inadequate... vague, but at the same time too specific to represent the notion that there are postural relationships to support that can be classed together because of mechanical-architectural similarities. The main distinction that provides the criteria for determining the SPHERE, is how the trunk is carried.
2 Spheres can be used at once, as the upper and lower body can each have a separate priority support system.
In partnered situations, each person could be working in two Spheres.

There are positions that are hard to define, for example when the hands or elbows are resting on the knees while standing on the feet. Andrea said that maybe we could say that the upper and lower body are each in Sphere 4. This of course suggests that the upper and lower body need to be considered separately sometimes.

AS DESCRIPTION - we did not get to this
Terminology for DESCRIBING MOVEMENTS
    physics
    anatomical descriptions
    spatial descriptions

Sterno-clavicular - triaxial
retract the elbow - the clavicular joint turns on the HA
elevate the shoulder - the clavicular joint turns on the SA
protract/retract the shouder - the clavicular joint turns on the VA

Trouble Shooting for Class - diagnosing situations and offering accurate counsel
being in balance can allow you to set boundaries for social responsibility
but we are not always in balance, and sometimes we must draw the line for our own well-being as teachers.

Democratic Languaging
General comments could be more subjective - specificity requires precise observation and counsel - the most useful counsel takes the objective of the student into account, perceives the obstacles to the continued process.
Feedback, even uninformed feedback, demo’s what the other person perceives, and can be useful. Its difficult to remain in balance, not to get defensive.
Avoid raising the student’s defensiveness if possible, as the defensive state precludes or inhibits the integration of new ideas, actually causes the brain to shut down.
Pronouncing, denouncing, accusing are violent modalities that we are trained to. The motivation to study information is most often to dominate the social sphere, and has little to do with the content.

TEST FLIGHT - EROCA NICHOLS
Back Space is the Place

Self review
I was very flustered in the beginning
hard to know i was being recorded... I know its all for the good...
dont feel like i used the spine model as well as i could have...
think the manip was more confusing than helpful
less detail would have been clearer for ppl..
time management was not as good as it could have been
could have given myself some time-checks...
tricky to address... when ppl do things that r slightly unsafe...
one on one corrections...
i think I put one person on the spot... she might have felt singled out...
was a little risky to take something I have not completely figured out... the counterbalance...
wanted to work w something i am still working out... wonder if i should have shown something that was tried and true...
I felt pppl were generally moving well
and that it made

warm welcome
gather round the tech and the bones
I know most of you (singing)
this is the first montrl TL
exciting!
the TL is...
AS is not a dance style... no its not!!
its a syllabus... list... a way to org a bunch of research...
efficiency
different apps
horse-riders... apply AS principles...
marathon runner...
not just dancing...
I am pretty into this stuff excited to share it...
name round...
and then I will explain Back Space is the Place

BSis theP... what does that mean...
SB
how do you make your life easier by employing the tri-axial potential of your spine.
avoid extreme movements hyper this or that...

so spread out

going over terms
anterior-posterior internal/external ref

so come back in to look at the model...

processes - transverse processes - joint facets...

T12... so... lumbar... thoracic... cervical
andrea... is L3.. and Ill b L4
Lumbar doesn’t allow for rotation...
its a good idea to keep your lumbar in its lordotic curve
lordosis, kyphosis, lordosis
twisting can happen but only when the lumbar is flexed,
but doesn’t seem like a good idea when the bones are more disposed to stay together

descrip of thoracic facets
T12 is the base where you have a bit more rotation

lets try this, incline side adding some rotation
extreme positions in the cervical spine + saying ones name...

give your self some more space
hi erin.. Dont worry I will explain everything at home

SB sitting with both legs in HFX
touching with hands...

instead of a tree in Bwy show... this mono-plane thing..
ant pelv away...
thoracic towards the Leg
we r between both sit bones... no SB
so lets see how we can connect the 2 sides fluidly

SB to other side

explaining ant oriented SB... ant quadrant

pelvis... crotch is going away...
hand on the torso.. singing which way is it going...

touching.. crotch this is our what?... kayla is saying lumbar
priority support is the support i need to keep staying up... exmpl

onto the belly... starting w pelvis...
up nd back dwn
tail wag
that may or may not feel like a lot of work.. so we can work w another human
andrea help me...
back to back... going to surfing begin
excellent descrip

wing it?

some sweet tunes...
mayb u want to decide who goes on top...

lets look at these two... analysis
can u try without straight legs... let the legs go...can let go of the idea that we need to hold...
when you go around the corner dont have to leave my head behind...
if i dont take my head with me... makes me heavier I will be heavier...
want to make my partners life easier... and the nice thiing is that in this case I make life easier for myself...
question... ok can you show me...
ok
the top human... u dont have to just fall (crash)...
ok dont have to push lower spine into my spine
taking own weight into my arms...

Ashley - are u waiting as the top person for the underp to push?
… sorry for interrupting...
Andrea - r we dropping the head over...
um... what was the question?
Eve... not tucking under?
oh i didnt mean we shouldn’t let that happen... want to keep u in the safe curve...

working with laughing lady
wrkng w andrea and prtnr
wrkng with short haired grl  - prioritized twist when she goes on top
so ppl if u dont let the diff prst of the spine do diff things...harder... more work...
smoother ride
… any questions?

ok we r going to stand up...
checking SB... head has autonomy...
wag tail...
lumbar facing generally away... etc...
beautiful... magical...

w prtner... walking holdng hands one facing bck one front...
dont have to go straight bck and forth... there will b other humans...
not holding on for dear life...

LLady... who is leading...
n one is really leading...  (really?)

lovely music...

can I pause us for a sec?
a couple of … tricky... mayb stay w one person as the leader...
2 things about this neighborhood to this neihbrhd... breathing can get hampered...
mayb trust a bit more in your partner...
instead of hlding my torso in a blck... if my body is stiff and I hit someone more impact is likely..
dont want to push ur partners into uncomfort situation

blue shirt woman... tone in the shoulder?
too much tone... jarring... or completely passive
wrkn with LL hard for her to release...

so how is everyone?...
no we r going to work with Hanging Sphere... (spheres)
if i let go of Andrea... I would fall... my new priority

grab a new human... fall away...

LL has trouble leaning out...
if we let go...we would fall...
LL i dont know...
we wont test it but I promise

Andrea can u talk about how shoulder is in relation to the torso...
i we  r both falling out we are mirroring each other... but if we were coming up and andrea was helping me up...

lets try this...
SB away from partner...
start to reverse SB (to F-support... as we go to the ground)

do u want to try this...
lets try in a circle...

3 SB in quick succession...
lft- rt - lft

make sure u take enough space so u dont kick someone in the head

there r some who are working harder than they need to
so i dont want to do a one legged squat..
can rely on prtner more...
however when u get up... if i flex...
and if u r supporting... take to walk bck

LL is it momentum?
partially... but
drop the crotch... walk bakc
dont want to help my prtnr up with a flexd spine...

wrking w top-knot mullatto

hi everyone...
we will do it in a not so helpful...
and then helpful
so thats not helping me u r walking towards me Zoe...

are u ready for something else... or do u want to try this one more time?

Andrea.. one more time...

laurel brought up something I would like her to bring it up TO THE WHOLE HERD....

seems counter-intuitive to go away as being more responsible...
can you say your name...

so lets take this into a phrase... so we may not get to all of this...
xcellent descrip

LL sits out as you go into the phrase... foo

dont want my weight shift to dictate where my hand goes?
hej?

LL/Zoe came back!

not worried about people staying with the music... but I would like u to dance together...

two groups...
follow the person who is in front...
confused lost student... doesnt know about the rivers... cant remember the phrase...

try it again once per human... if u can see anyone...
sorry guys... I am not a perfect DJ
any questions?

Top Knot... how do we get up to (sphere 4)?

ok if u dont have the super long hammys...

TK no I have this prb..
OH... ok the SB helps me put the weight on the hand...
and bring the head...

so starting here... if i swing my arm around that makes it easier... if i dont it makes it very tricky...

throwing the puppy...
swing the pelvis first...
bcause its looking pokey....

oh...we r out of time...
thank you everyone....

enthused applause...

lets just quietly shake...

so just so ppl know... kells tomorrow...

TEST FLIGHT KELLY KEENAN
mixed media ankle lab

self review
want to show the notes...
had to pay for it... andrea/ I have one...
I wish I … i realise i didnt talk i wish we had taken the foot like this to feel how the top of the talus slides... pretty useful...
I dont know I thought it was great, didnt want it to be great...
i had doubts... does it help yu to draw the foot... to massage the foot... to see the foot on cam..
I wanted to try things... energy was giddy sometimes...
I tend to adapt to people ...so these people need birthing...

frey do you remember when you made me draw my foot... in brussels... and I couldnt...
the process of representing it 3D... helped my understanding.. so the question was seeing it in the minds eye...
wasnt clear about the ankle drawing... wanted to see aomething about your knowlege of the bones...
so if we drew the foot like this... we could mark the ankle axis
it was a knowlegable group... sensetive...cept Edoardo
the slide show i presetned a few years ago wouldnt present anymore but it provided archive...
was it hard to do this (put the fingers on the ankle to follow the axis change... )?
i would like to elaborate and go into dancing... spear-foot (stamping on the receptive foot)
you have this diag everywhere you go...
there were too many people to really get into the walk...
but it really allowed people to work autonomously and collectively... that they could watch on cam made my eyes less important... not enough time to try relever and dancing...
I like it I would do it again...
its not so complicated
Andrea you dont even need a projector... u could just use a computer...
wanted to get a hand held...
I was using the internet... imovie... the projector and my music playing over there...
i am happy … i am tired...

hi everyone, can you get an 8 1/2x11 piece of paper
the projector is there.. I would like to turn it off but... well try not to give it too much attention
I teach alot there are things I would like to try
people pay, there is a contract, pressure to perform
but in this context I can experiement
I would ike to focus on an aspect of walking - ankle aignment propulsion phase of waling
generally I think there is a basic understanding of walking and what the propulsive phase
ruth has made a kind donation of huggies
like to start with a foot massage... if you feel shy about your feet....
foot massages can be uncomfortable.. but in my imagination we were lying down
palpating... but also drop down on the floor
i dont know how much information to give you
but it took my about 3 years to re-weave new patterns
frey gave up on me in brussels... i understood intellectually
then i drew my foot, and finally began to perceive it, so the massage is another way of experiencing the foot
we will take about 5 min per person

acoustic music - background strings and perc

ok make your way over to your paper
ok draw your ankle...
Ashley... from a particular angle?

Any angle

totally cool pics of sculptures by Anthony Gormley
“we are our own sculptors and sculptures”

how are you doing?
...one more minute?... 2... 3... ok 3

so i realise that drawing can b like singing... if you dont know how it can be embarassing, but if you are willing to share you can do it privately...
this slide show is a little outdated
but it is a basic intro..
I will go through this and then we can get to the subject matter
walking is something we do a lot of so it informs how the body works and can be the source of limitations and other problems

ok lets look at some of the anatomy..
dang i need a pointer..
eroca can you go fwd... calcaneus?

ok go over to the otherone... the talus...
slide down... what that one?

cuboid...
there are there cuneaform...
ok this image or x-ray shows that the calcaneus is enormous takes up one third of the foot..
goes out on the diag...

(see video of presentation)

ok lets stand up
to ashley... can i see your ankles...
actually i am not ready for you yet

ok everyone stand up
lets rock to turn out...

flexions testing dropping axis in
extension testing dropping out...
then opposite..

ok so lets go for a walk... did you ever row a boat?
so thats basically the axis that we use as we go..

the propulsory foot’s axis doesn’t change until it is behind you and pushing you...

explaining axis shift in french with a pen to illustrate the shift

if I were to do a relever without shifting the axis it would look like this...
or if i walked like this … which i still do sometimes...
on the receptive foot the axis tips laterally as it moves towards dorsi-flexion...
your paddles are more or less synchronized. like a boat race
someone takes a step, using pens to indicate the differing axes  in the receptive and propulsory foot... ( is that correct?)

ok now I am ready for a partner...

a lot of my students have the tendency to bind the foot in the receptive position, but if we can just let it fall, gravity will already pull the foot to appropriate relationship with the earth

so just scootch along with your partner and follow the axial change in the ankle as they step.

music: bregovitch version (screaming pixie) make for a laugh

ok... lets have a little talk... so.. can i borrow you... can you do that again slowly...... STOP
so even when we get up... we want to be on this diagonal...
recap of bones...
spoon represents propulsory foot... that becomes the catapult for th body as the weight drops forward
didn’t catch the ...
so with erin...
erin: oh you are going to watch me get up... heh

she had a tendency to drop in, so we narrowed the track...

and with (name) she was doing this (externally rotating propulsory back foot)

comment... couldn’t see the change of the axis.. is it just very subtle?
No... I dont think it is... and to prove this we will do a live video feed!!
slow walking, then relever on two feet, then one, then arabesque (see video)

I think we re a lot more nervous now that we are on camera
can really see which part of the leg is turning

excellent music choice... grating and dynamic... a bit loud... but awareness spiking...
ruth notes to me that people are flexing cervicals … not looking at video... scared...

now jumping

just do what you want to do...
afro, tap, modern...

(couldn’t hear last comment over music)

ok...
so...lets come together...
(computer plays music)
yeah thanks... I am glad that I tried that
do you have any ? about the foot that I didn’t get to?

Andrea... can you talk about... I felt there is a baby arch

yeah... the baby arch between the calc and the back end of the 5th meta-trsl the calc and cuboid are suspended here...
like a trampoline
when there is weight on it, the trampoline gets closer to the ground..

there was a ?
the propulsory foot is usually not the first thing you would talk about... you would learn to receive... when I taught this subject before i took the time that was necessary to make sure they were in alignment
would need a bigger cam... no cables...

comment: was a beautiful creation... the music

i have a friend who was not able to perceive that she was pushing her talus into the ground...
the video helped...

in closed chain situation the external rotation of the leg provides stabilizing torsion...

not clear... (yes it was!)

RUTH DOUTHWRIGHT

self review
not convinced about the usefulness of the Test Flight

Kelly mayb its not just about you... also helping us...
Andrea, mayb its also a chance to affirm things you are trying things out...

Hi I am ruth
i have been working w children..
I am going to use you... maybe you can think about a childlike state
I am going to take you through this class format that i have been developing w kids
they are mostly 6 7 years old
been in school all day...
in the past i taught Test Flghts... designed the class for the participants..
bt at the moment i am really working with kids on along term basis

so a little more info on them
poor, dont dance, xcept my daughter.
they are very raw
or they know the dance competetions, uniforms
the parents who take their kids to me would like them to do something different...
so they come into the space and i let them go wild for the first few minutes
so try... walking around and talk... socialize

sothey know by now that when i start stamping in the middle they come join in..

stamping clapping

body percussion... slow then fast

i have these strategies of showing off, impressing them... then they want to do it
just keep this rhythm
transferring the weight

Kelly... can they do this?

Yea actually...

so lets come closer so we can listen...

steady pulse...
ok keep this as the base and find your own variation on the rhythm

stopping with the clapping...

walking fwd and back...

adding a hop fwd

and vocalize... “ AHHOUM “

lift the arm and vocalize “ EEHH”

“ HAHAHA” on the hop
HAHAHAHOUM EEHH

lifting walk...to stop
ok lets sit
I have been working with them on this.. past 2 mo

so now we can work on this rhythmic ptterns...

I have notived that the clssiacal barre, the stillness creates focus and engenders respect
I find that I need to stay very strict in order to establish this respected space.

clapping thighs, snapping fingers and saying people’s names...

I always think we need to warm up.. even tho I know that we are already warm

this can be hard for them... they often do not have the stretch

i have them touch their heads..
retreat... do the buttefly with their hands
then make a second poition

then the biggest position you can make.... floral mountain

then quickly make the largest soe you can  “ mountain!!!”
and ashley?

Dinosaur!!

i have been this with them but its not working

legs extended...rocking from the feet... as if you were saying yets... releasing the voice
then bending legs in ext rota
racking from side to side...
and u r every so slowly find your way on to hands andfreet
and find your way up...
curling your toes under

watching....

jeremy is last...

so the next is on the elements... each one has a different music...
usually we had big pieces of paper
the I said the first words,,, for example...

we can start w these images they contributed
and while u r improvising you can add words of your own
so go ahead into the room … choose a place you would like to start

? What is our first

I always start with earth..

music : andian flute and desert drum

i just repeat these wrds again

EARTH
mud - dirt - stone - mountain - dig - sand - clay

(please bring your own words)

low
warm
packed
layered
crust
mold
sediment
trees
river
roots

so find a place where u would like to finish this dance.

another beginning for water

Water
river - ocean - lake - swaet - crying - bath - rain - pool -

fish
bubly
boat
rushing
cleanse
effervescent
boredom
unforgiving
wet
salty
savory
ice
ice cones
melt

find ur end to this dance ( puddle..... dispersing)

the nxt dance is fire....

i ask them to stand up and move to another place in the room
the words are: hot - wood - matches - energy - fast - burning - campfire - bomb - explosion
clever music

rage
crackle
smoulder
hiss
smoky
surprised
paper
energy
red
hot, jumping in
sizzling
ashes

find a way to end....

so we are going to move into water...

AIR

sorry... I meant to say this
some words - -
to be honest I only remember four words
birds - kite - jump and breathing

music, very clever music

wind... whistling, flag..

finding how to finish this dance
nice
come to the circle
lets learn a set folk dance... gets them to focus

i always start with the rhythm in the hands...

o o ooo o o ooo
ooooooooooooo
o  o   o   o   o   o
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

circle walking pattern

o     o   o   o    o       o         o  o    o    o
step step run run skip    step step run run skip

step together, step touch

lets just clap together...

4 st fwd... then as fast as you can on the spot

the 4 stps and fast as you can in...

from the beginning ,,, fyi this is a hungarian dance,
repeats over and over...

throwing in complete version in the middle... stepstepsteptouch stepstepsteptouch 4 stps and fast as u can...

so go ahead and go to that end of the room... and I will work with some movement across the floor

usually the kids classes r 1 hr.
so i am throwing out a bunch of info..
this is the only part of the class where I give them bio-mech... perhaps my teaching.. or their short attention span
but i find that they cannot focus for long
there are 2 boys that are so falling in.
so I try alot of games...
does anyone know see see my playmate... (patsy hands)
clasp hands one over one under
nowadays the guys do this too, in my day it was just the girls

so get close GET CLOSER OR IT WONT WORK...

so add a bounce will be more pleasurable...

“ all singing....

whistle

sisi my playmate... come out and play with me... and bring your  climb up my apple tree
slide down my rainbow into my cellar door and we’ll be jolly friends... forever more... more

so try just holding hands and bouncing...

sometimes there is giddiness... because its set brings up competitiveness in the kids...
often s strategies... as the teacher lifting her leg
same tactic really... to bring a competitive speed...
in order to accomplish that one has to be on their toes... be efficient...

arabic music... bouncing walk...

small gallop...

ok... alot of you ended up doing... this... (wooden back leg syndrome)
so i have them kick the wall...

Kelly... oi the 303 office asked us not to kick that wall...
we can kick over here...

ok... just curious

ok try this... jumping in-outin-out as fast as you can...
before I make a correction... try to be on this tempo.... buhbuhbuhbuhbuhbuhbuhbuhbuhbuh
try to keep that piece of pizza (didnt hear the correction)

so your observation...
ext rotation makes my bum go tense - nice calf release...
hurts my toe to evert th foot...

I have been working with the receptive part of the foot

so try this (bumping the dorsal side against the wall)

ok this is a traditional step... in hebrew its called... the broken leg... but i didn’t want them to behave as if the leg was broken

so do you feel extra tension on the inside of the leg when you do this step?

Kelly i have a student who is very supinated...

most of them are like this... (falling in)
even when they are walking...

ok lets try the step...
they start off in front of you... you change the step and those who r looking grab the new variation... then re-cross the room, now the rest pick it up... is that the step?

holding hands
dont get shorter!!!

re-crossing room... to start again
now adding bouncing arms and a circle walk

ok … aha... only 10 min

so lets line up... give frey the best view - corner of the room
so we are going to start stepping with the left foot

stepping 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
then much faster...
turning into the center of the group...

off to the next corner...

transfer and cross... leg is going to be pleced right where your pelvis is falling to...

i teach the kids this whole dance, but without all the step variations...

ok lets try...
i will stand here ( out in front of the line...)

ok lets do it...

[color=#000000][size=small][font=Arial]start off..... LETS REPEA
